month of lauren // 6

June 6th was another busy day at work, but I made time for special things.

Mom's birthday was Monday but I was so swamped at work that I didn't have a chance to see her. As soon as things cleared up a bit, I made plans to take her out to lunch and drove over to her office around noon. I gave her the present I'd gotten, a pair of silver knot earrings from Tiffany, which leads me to an aside...

Mother-effin Tiffany. I'd been inside Tiffany maybe once or twice but it's always been so iconic in my mind. There's one right near my office and I was able to stop over during a break on Monday quickly (I didn't want to say anything until I actually gave her the present, just in case I'd ruin the surprise!). Everyone was so kind and helpful, and inside it was beautiful, calm, inviting. I had always wanted to waltz my sexy suited self into Tiffany and buy something, and I finally did.

Anyway. Back to Mom. I went to her office and gave her the present, and then we went off to lunch at Buffalo Wing University, nom nom. We grabbed some beers, she had a salad, I had a bacon cheeseburger, which leads me to another aside...

You guys, I'm this close to changing "The Month of Lauren" to "The Month That Lauren Eats All of The Bacon!!!!" Seriously. I had never had a bacon cheeseburger before -- and no, I did not grow up in a nunnery -- and omfg they're so good! Anyway.

Mom and I enjoyed a great time together with lots of laughter, and it really was a bright spot in my week.

On the way home I turned up the radio ("Call Me Maybe," of course!) and flew along the road with all the windows down. I looked in my rearview at a stoplight to see a Blazer barreling toward me. He swerved to the side and managed to avoid plowing into my little Honda by just a foot or so. My heart pounded and I wondered why that had happened. Were my lights not working? Had I slipped my foot off of the brake right as he was coming up to the light? What did I do?

As we continued down the road, I realized that he was just an idiot. He was driving so erratically, bumping up against the concrete divider in the middle of the road, frequently drifting into other lanes, braking way too late, and driving with his head on his window. It. Was. Terrifying. I got over into the other lane immediately just so that I wasn't in front of him anymore, and every time he got nearby I was on the lookout for ways out. I desperately wanted to call to report him to the PD but I couldn't get close enough to see his license plate without fearing for my life. He finally got into a turn lane and I breathed a deep sigh of relief.

Life lesson! My instinct was to wonder what I'd done to make him nearly total my car. I need to stop beating myself up. People are just assholes sometimes.

My coworker B came back from her lunch break with a gorgeous bottle of Essie nail polish. She handed it to me with a huge smile and said, "This is for your month of awesomeness!" It's Essie's "orange, it's obvious!" and bet your butt that I painted my nails immediately. It's a bright, cheery color that I never would have picked for myself and I love it. Oh, plus it's Mets orange. Yeahhh boy.

Thanks for all your support through this adventure, friends. Another update tomorrow night, same Bat-time, same Bat-channel!
